The SOUTH MAIN HISTORIC DISTRICT attracts visitors from across the globe.
Small boutique shops and restaurants line the gaslit 10-block brick street Historic District restored to its period of significance, 1769-1920. A village of residents, shopkeepers, and small inns... the ambience of South Main is an authentic experience.
Founded in 1769, on the banks of the Missouri River, the beginnings of the town began on what became known as South Main Street. Lewis & Clark began their famous journey from this spot in 1804. St. Charles was the departure point for many wagons traveling westward.
